GenieATM Co-working with Cisco Guard Provides a Total Network Threat Mitigation Solution to Jinhua Telecom

GenieNRM today announced that Jinhua Telecom, a city-level subsidiary company of China Telecom, has chosen GenieNRM’s GenieATM for its network-wide anomaly detection, mitigation as well as effective incident forensics capabilities to reduce the possible losses caused by network anomaly threats.

Nowadays service providers are facing constant and growing threats to ensure their bandwidth availability and performance. The most intimidating threats to a service provider’s bandwidth availability are the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. DDoS attacks paralyze Internet systems by overwhelming servers, network links, and network devices (routers, switches, firewalls, etc.) Different security tools of DDoS protection exist including firewalls, IDP, ACL in routers or switches, etc. However, these conventional perimeter security tools do not by themselves provide comprehensive DDoS protection, especially in a service providers’ network environment like Jinhua Telecom. Conventional perimeter security products fail to address Jinhua Telecom’s network security needs in two major issues. For one, traditional security products do not correlate control plane and data plane traffic anomalies at a high enough level to view largely geographic dispersal attacks. Also service providers like Jinhua Telecom face new requirements that demand technologies offering greater scale and requiring less human intervention and providing a higher level of overall network traffic intelligence from which to act. Therefore, defending against the current DDoS threatening Internet availability requires a more purpose-built architecture that includes the ability to specifically detect and mitigate the increasingly threats.

After a thorough search for network anomaly threat mitigation solutions, Jinhua Telecom decided to fulfill its needs using GenieNRM’s and Cisco’s total anomaly detection and mitigation solution. Jinhua Telecom deployed one GenieATM Controller, one GenieATM Collector and one GenieATM MSP Collector to collect traffic flow data from the routers in its core, backbone and access networks. In addition to the GenieATM systems, Jinhua Telecom also installed three Cisco Guard module cards on a Cisco router in its Traffic Cleaning Center. Unlike traditional network security solutions which are usually deployed in-line, GenieATM + Cisco Guard solution is deployed in an “off-line” approach, and offers premier DDoS attack detection, mitigation and reporting capabilities. As attacks are detected by GenieATM, it automatically signals the interior routing infrastructure to redirect all traffic destined for the attack target to the load-sharing Cisco Guard modules for traffic cleaning. The Cisco Guard modules scrub attack traffic and then re-inject cleaned traffic back to the destined site.

By deploying the GenieATM + Cisco Guard solution, Jinhua Telecom now can visualize its network traffic, identify and locate network anomalies timely, and mitigate network security threats in their early stages. Furthermore, due to the “off-line” and “load-balanced clustering” nature of the GenieATM + Cisco Guard solution, the multi-gigabit-grade attacking traffic can be well handled at full line rates with minimal latency.

"Traditional network security solutions fall short in terms of high-performance mitigation and ensuring business continuity,” said Po-wen Tseng, Senior Director of Product Marketing, GenieNRM, "the fact that service providers such as Jinhua Telecom are using GenieNRM’s anomaly detection technologies validates the fact that our solution is the most effective, reliable and scalable network DDoS threat prevention solution in the industry.”
