GenieNRM today announced that SOFTBANK TELECOM Corp. has adopted its GenieATM 6000 solution to provide a new "ULTINA Internet DDoS Detection and Defense Service" to the corporate customers of SOFTBANK TELECOM Corp.
Background
Among the diversified range of sophisticated Internet security threats, the counter measure of DoS/DDoS attacks is one of the important tasks for many organizations. According to a survey report of Japan National Police Agency1 , more than 50% of the survey responders answered "feeling the strong demand of security solutions for preventing the system down caused by DoS attacks." For network service providers, early stage threat detection and defense on their customers' networks is essential for them to provide stability and quality of network services.
Features of GenieATM 6000
GenieATM 6000 is a network appliance which provides network security and traffic visibility by leveraging flow data (e.g. NetFlow) collected by flow collectors. Network managers can log in a GenieATM 6000 system to utilize its "network traffic visualization" capabilities, such as to perform the regular network traffic monitoring and to conduct traffic analysis; to utilize its "network anomaly detection" capabilities, such as to detect DoS attacks by identifying real-time traffic deviations from the normal traffic baselines, and also to notify the anomalies by sending e-mail timely.
Conventionally, network intrusion detection and prevention services are usually provided by placing dedicated IDS/IPS devices on the customer networks and/or by offering the overall functions from providers' internal upstream networks. Now SOFTBANK TELECOM Corp. adopts the highly valued GenieATM 6000 functions, which leverage NetFlow2 effectively, to provide its customers the "DDoS detection and Defense service."
Also, with the "MSP (Managed Service Provisioning)" functions of GenieATM 6000, a login user can utilize his authorized functions to visualize the network scope he manages. This allows multiple network administrators to access GenieATM 6000 for using shared traffic monitor and analyze functions on different network scopes. Not only service providers but also network managers of enterprises and company groups can benefit from the MSP functions by enabling the anomaly detection service and gaining network traffic visualization.
Additionally, GenieATM 6000 provides attack defense by co-working with Guard devices3. When GenieATM 6000 detects ongoing attacks, it sends triggering commands to a Guard device, reroutes the anomalous traffic to Guard, and cleans the suspicious traffic (by blocking the attack traffic and re-injecting the scrubbed non-attack traffic back to the original targets.)
About GenieATM 6000
Since its launch in 2006, more than hundreds of GenieATM 6000 systems have been deployed by customers from a wide range of industries, including Carriers, ISPs, Data centers, enterprises, universities, and government agencies. Also at the Interop Tokyo 2009 held in June this year, GenieATM successfully demonstrated its MSP shared service functions and its DoS countermeasures co-working with Guard. The live demonstration was highly recognized, and hence GenieATM 6000 was honored with the top prize in the ShowNet Demonstration category, the "Best of Show Award GrandPrix."
