Overview
Trends in Network Resource Management

The Network Resource Management field is experiencing unparalleled growth; availability and reliability assurance have become overriding concerns for companies at every level of the network industry, including ISP, IDC, MSP, and MAN-solution business models.

In the past, capital and manpower costs have been far too great for any service provider justify independently owning a data collection, analysis, and resource management system. This is due to inevitable disproportionate investments on software and hardware, as well as the complexity of system installation and maintenance. With the advent of the Genie Management Service System, that has changed. GMSS provides an opportunity for these providers to independently own a decentralized, large-scale data collecting and analysis solution with multiple domain definition and management capabilities for a fraction of the cost of any comparable system.

This state-of-the-art resource management and troubleshooting solution targets one goal: Centralized System, Decentralized Management. In this context, installation and operation of the resource management system is centralized, while information designated only for particular staff members is decentralized or "multiplexed", either locally or remotely. Under this model, management information formerly processed at great cost and distance can be handled on location.

GenieNRM: Service Niche, Product Capabilities

GenieNRM's GMSS solution focuses on service level management in order to aid ISPs, and IDCs in collecting traffic and resource information and establishing, monitoring, and backing service level agreements (SLA). GMSS also provides a means for ISPs to enter the management service provider (MSP) market by offering an enterprise-level resource fault management and tracking solution to private customers. The decentralized nature of the system allows these providers to offer private customers access to a full-scale resource management solution available online, via subscription. GMSS can also support the billing, provisioning, and traffic data collection functions vital to providers entering into the MAN-solution space.

The GenieNRM Management Service System operates on a Linux platform, and is based on a powerful client-server distributed architecture. Multi-tier system components including the Info Concentrator, Info Arbitrator, Polling Agent, Alarm Dispatcher and others are responsible for individually designated roles in system operations. This serves to enhance both scalability and reliability.

Both service providers and individual domain managers or private customers can easily access monitoring information on various network resource types and services using any standard Web browser; should an error occur, event "trouble tickets" are issued and received immediately via email, pager, or SMS device.

Fault Management

The most special character of the GMSS Fault Management is to correlate events for all monitored resources related and find out which one is the root cause. Resource Hierarchy is the key factor in GMSS’s ability to correlate events. The GMSS Fault Management function automatically ascertains the dependency hierarchy for all monitored domains and resources. Once root cause has been identified, GMSS Fault Management will create trouble tickets and notify engineers to handle problems. With the built-in Trouble Ticket System, every trouble ticket will be tracked until it was recovered. You can define an alarm escalation plan and then GMSS will notify the second-string engineers or higher-level managers once the trouble ticket was not recovered in the specified period.

Network Performance Management
GMSS provides many performance indexes of network measurement; meanwhile, it also provides a performance console said RTR Console. RTR Console allows you to monitor the status of the network path between any network nodes. With RTR Console, you can monitor whole network status in a glance in real time. Once you found any problems between two network nodes, you can use Online Report to review the performance information between the nodes in a specified time period you prefer.
1. measurement between network nodes:
  • RTT(Round Trip Time)
  • Packet Loss Rate
  • Jitter
  • Single Direction Delay
2. measurement of interface on devices:
  • Availability
  • Input/Output Packet Drop
  • Input/Output Packet Error
  • Input/Output Packet Rate
  • Input/Output Traffic Rate
  • Input/Output Volume
  • Bandwidth Utilization
Online Report: shows the performance of network interface in real time.
RTR Matrix: shows the performance between network nodes.

Reporting System
GMSS Reporting gives service providers and end users a clear view of resource and service performance; this in turn is helpful for the manager of company to make a correct business decision. GMSS provides both fault statistics report and performance report.
GMSS Fault Statistics Report
GMSS provides a variety of fault statistics report according to different criteria.
  • Ticket Statistics Report
  • Event Leader Report
  • Unavailability Leader Report
  • Down Time Leader Report
  • Ticket Response Time Leader Report
  • Ticket Average Response Time Leader Report
GMSS Performance Report
The GMSS reporting function presents a variety of performance chart, offering views of network health from multiple monitoring perspectives. Users should understand the meaning of each graph in order to track and improve network availability, reliability, and performance. GMSS can generate standard, comparison, and trend graphs.
