GenieNRM Launches GenieNPC v1.6 with Unprecedented Skype Traffic Control Capability.
The carrier-grade traffic service control solution offering the unprecedented Skype policy shaping capability, which not only identifies Skype traffic but also rate controls it with definable usage policies.

Genie Network Resource Management Inc.(GenieNRM Inc.)today announced the release of its GenieNPC 5800 v1.6 with the market unprecedented Skype Traffic classification and policy controlling capability.

Rolled out in late 2005, GenieNPC 5800 is a carrier-grade traffic service control system capable of performing traffic classification up to L7. The signature matching and session tracking mechanisms can promptly and accurately discover applications which have no well-known, fixed service ports, such as VoIP and most of P2P applications. Through the flexible bandwidth policy configuration, GenieNPC 5800 enables network managers to limit unwanted application bandwidth consumption, prevent revenue-impacting services, block attacks, ensure business-critical application, and offer differentiated services. GenieNPC 5800 solution offers Telecoms/SPs, campus and enterprises a complete suite of bandwidth management tools to effective prevent network abuse, ensure performance of critical applications to optimize network bandwidth utilization, reduce bandwidth cost and hence increase Return of Investment (ROI).

With the version 1.6 launched today, GenieNPC highlights its capability of identifying and controlling two extra high-profile encrypted P2P applications. Adding Skype and Winny (a very popular P2P application in Japan) to its P2P application portfolio which GenieNPC is able to control, GenieNRM is proud to prove itself as the technology pioneer in the carrier service control market. Figuring how to classify and block Skype has been a significant challenge, since the application has been difficult to identify due to its encryption nature of the whole communication process. Unlike other Skype-blocking/filtering solutions which detect only Skype logging sessions and possibly identifying Skype through behavior-based Skype traffic detection, wreck the logging process and hence turn off the usage of Skype completely. By utilizing a special Skype packet inspection engine, GenieNPC is able to correctly identify Skype traffic and hence can do better with performing tiered traffic shaping policies upon the detected traffic.

As a "free" service, Skype is sabotaging the business model of service providers who want to roll out VoIP services for their customers. Since the application traffic is not only causing network bandwidth bottlenecks but also impacting the voice services revenues, service providers would like to see something to be done about the Skype traffic. However, a function limited Skype filtering solution which allows only to shutdown the application usage abruptly wouldn’t be the choice for service providers concerning the customer satisfaction and network neutrality issues. Therefore, GenieNPC’s policy control capability over the P2P traffic including Skype is the one which meets carriers’ needs better than any one else in the market.

GenieNPC5800 v1.6 which is able to identify and control Skype (up to its current 2.0 version) is now available. For more information, please contact or visit http://www.genienrm.com/partners/partners.htm
